Minecraft farm calculator: crop, mob and XP farm output
Work out the exact output of any Minecraft farm. Pick a farm type (crops, mobs, XP), set the size, layers, collection method and enchantments, and the calculator shows items per hour, XP per hour, emerald value and an efficiency rating. Compare every farm in the category on an interactive chart.
How do farms work in Minecraft?
Farms in Minecraft are builds that automate resource gathering, from food and raw materials to XP and rare mob drops. Every farm relies on a game mechanic: random ticks (crops), spawn zones (mobs) or redstone systems (automation). A farm's efficiency depends on three main factors: production speed, size and collection method.
Random ticks control crop growth. By default, Minecraft applies 3 random ticks per 16x16x16 chunk section on every game tick. That means a crop doesn't grow at a fixed pace; instead, it has a chance to grow on each random tick. That's why the calculator uses average growth times, which can differ in practice.
Mob spawn zones depend on your distance from the farm: mobs despawn beyond 128 blocks and don't spawn within 24 blocks of you. Mob farms work best when the player stands at the right distance from the spawn platform. A dungeon spawner spawns mobs within a 4-block radius and needs a player within 16 blocks.
Crop farms: what to know
Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot
These four crops share the same growth time: about 24,000 ticks on average (roughly 20 minutes with full light and hydration). They differ in yield: wheat and beetroot give 1 item, while carrots and potatoes give 2-5 items (the calculator uses an average of 3). Fortune III increases carrot and potato yields, but not wheat or beetroot.
The most important factor is hydration. A crop within 4 blocks of water grows much faster. A light level of 9 or higher is required for growth. Automation with pistons and observers lets you harvest crops without a player present.
Melon and pumpkin
Melons and pumpkins work differently: a stem grows and then produces a fruit block on an adjacent block. The average time per fruit is about 6,000 ticks (5 minutes). A melon drops 3-7 slices (Fortune increases the yield) and a pumpkin drops 1 block. Melon and pumpkin farms are easy to automate with pistons and observers.
Sugar cane, cactus, bamboo
These crops grow upward and don't need replanting. Sugar cane and cactus grow roughly every 18,000 ticks (15 minutes) up to a maximum height of 3 blocks. Bamboo is the fastest: it grows roughly every 4,096 ticks (about 3.5 minutes) up to 12-16 blocks. All three can be fully automated with observers and pistons.
Sugar cane is especially valuable: it is the raw material for paper, and paper can be sold to a librarian for emeralds. Bamboo works as furnace fuel (for smelting XP) and as a material for blocks of bamboo.
Mob farms: how they compare
Iron golem farm
The best iron source in the game. Every layer needs its own villagers and beds. Each golem drops 3-5 iron ingots. Multi-layer farms (4-8 layers) produce hundreds of ingots per hour. You can sell iron to an armorer (4 ingots = 1 emerald).
Zombified piglin farm (gold)
Built on the Nether roof (Y=128 and above) or at a Nether portal in the Overworld. Zombified piglins drop gold nuggets (9 = 1 gold ingot) and golden swords. Looting raises the yield further. The spawn rate is very high thanks to the large spawning surface on the Nether roof.
Enderman farm
Built in the End. Endermen end up on a platform where a fall leaves them at low health, so one hit kills them. The farm yields ender pearls (used for eyes of ender, which locate strongholds and End portals) and 5 XP per kill. It is one of the fastest XP farms in the game.
Blaze farm
Built around a blaze spawner in a Nether fortress. A blaze gives 10 XP per kill (twice as much as most mobs) and drops blaze rods, a key ingredient for brewing potions and crafting eyes of ender. The spawner produces 1-4 blazes every 10-40 seconds.
Guardian farm
One of the most efficient farms in the game, but also the hardest to build. It requires draining an ocean monument, which takes 10-20 hours of work. Guardians give 10 XP and drop prismarine and fish. Once built, it produces thousands of items per hour.
XP farms compared
XP (experience) in Minecraft is needed to enchant items at an enchanting table (level 30), repair them on an anvil and rename them. Here are the XP farms ranked from fastest:
- Enderman farm in the End: ~6,000 XP/h, ~130 levels/h. Requires defeating the Ender Dragon. One of the fastest methods in the game.
- Blaze farm: ~4,000 XP/h, ~86 levels/h. Easier to build than the Enderman farm. A spawner in a Nether fortress.
- Zombie/skeleton farm (spawner): ~1,250 XP/h, ~27 levels/h. A classic farm, available early in the game. Find a spawner in a dungeon underground.
Keep in mind that XP drops only if the player damaged the mob within the 5 seconds before it died. Fully automatic kill systems (lava, or a fall with no player hit) give no XP. That's why the best XP farms use a "one-hit kill" setup: the mob's health is reduced automatically and the player finishes it with a single hit.
Enchantments that affect farms
Fortune
Fortune on a tool increases the yield of some crops: carrots, potatoes, melons and nether wart. Fortune III gives a chance of 1-3 extra items. It doesn't increase wheat, beetroot, pumpkin, sugar cane, cactus or bamboo yields. In automatic farms (harvesting with pistons) Fortune doesn't work: the enchantment requires breaking the crop by hand.
Looting
Looting on a sword increases mob drops. Each level gives a chance of extra items (up to +1 per level). It only works when the player lands the final blow, so automatic farms don't benefit from Looting.
Mending
Mending on a sword or pickaxe repairs the tool with XP orbs instead of adding them to your experience bar. In XP farms with heavy mob traffic, Mending keeps the tool in perfect shape without anvil repairs.
Farm optimization tips
- Stand at the right distance: mobs don't spawn within 24 blocks of you and despawn beyond 128 blocks. Your AFK spot should be 24-28 blocks from the spawn platform.
- Light up the area: hostile mobs have a spawn cap. Lighting up caves and the surface around the farm directs spawns onto the farm platform.
- Use hoppers: hoppers collect items automatically and keep them from disappearing (items despawn after 5 minutes). One hopper moves 2.5 items per second.
- Build in layers: extra layers multiply a farm's output. A 4-layer farm produces about 4x as much as a single-layer one.
- Tick speed: the default randomTickSpeed is 3. Changing it on a server affects crop growth speed (higher = faster). It doesn't affect mob spawns.
- Java vs Bedrock: spawning and growth mechanics differ between editions. Java Edition farms may not work in Bedrock, and vice versa. The calculator uses Java Edition rates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most efficient farm in Minecraft?
For XP per hour, the Enderman farm in the End (about 6,000 XP/h from one platform). For items, an iron golem farm (about 160 iron ingots/h per layer), a guardian farm (thousands of prismarine per hour) or a bamboo farm (thousands of items per hour). The easiest one to build is a zombie or skeleton spawner farm. Actual output depends on farm size, collection method and game version.
How do I calculate farm output?
Farm output depends on three things: growth or respawn speed (ticks per cycle), farm size (number of plants or spawners) and collection efficiency (roughly 80-85% by hand and 95-98% with hoppers or water). For crops: items/h = (72,000 / ticks per cycle) x plants x yield x efficiency. For mob farms: items/h = spawns/h x layers x drops x efficiency. Our calculator does the math for you, including enchantments and the collection method.
How much iron does an iron golem farm produce?
One layer (about 40 golems per hour) gives roughly 160 iron ingots per hour. A 4-layer farm produces about 640 ingots per hour. Every layer needs its own villagers and beds. Iron can be sold to an armorer (4 ingots = 1 emerald).
Does Fortune work on all crops?
No. Fortune boosts the yield of carrots, potatoes, melons and nether wart, but not wheat, beetroot, pumpkins, sugar cane, cactus or bamboo. Fortune only works when you break the crop by hand with the enchanted tool, so pistons and observers don't benefit from it.
How much XP does an Enderman farm give?
About 6,000 XP per hour from one platform, which is roughly 4 times the XP needed to reach level 30 from scratch (level 30 takes 1,395 XP). It is one of the fastest XP farms in the game. It requires defeating the Ender Dragon and building the spawn platform.
Does Looting work in automatic farms?
No. Looting requires the player to land the final blow with an enchanted sword. Automatic kill systems (lava, falling, cactus) don't benefit from Looting. The best setup is to bring the mob's health down automatically and let the player finish it with one hit from a Looting III sword.
