Minecraft /effect command generator: give, clear and manage status effects
Status effects are one of Minecraft's most powerful mechanics. They change how a player or mob behaves, from faster movement and invisibility to near-total invulnerability. The /effect command lets you give and remove any effect from the chat, a command block or a data pack function. Our /effect command generator makes it easy: you pick an effect, set the duration, strength and target, and the tool builds a ready-to-copy command, separately for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
The game has more than 33 status effects, from basics like Speed and Strength to exotic ones like Wind Charged and Weaving, added in update 1.21. Every effect has a unique ID, an amplifier level and a duration measured in ticks (1 second = 20 ticks). The generator converts seconds to ticks automatically and shows details for each effect: what it does, where you can get it naturally and its maximum natural level.

How the /effect command works
The /effect command is one of the most important tools for adventure map makers, server admins and players experimenting in Creative mode. Its basic syntax in Java Edition looks like this:
- Give an effect:
/effect give <target> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles] - Clear one effect:
/effect clear <target> <effect> - Clear all effects:
/effect clear <target>
In Bedrock Edition the syntax is slightly different: there is no give keyword. The effect is applied directly: /effect <target> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles]. Our generator adjusts the command format to the edition you pick.
/effect parameters: what each one does
Target (target selector)
Decides who receives the effect. You can use a selector: @p (nearest player), @a (all players), @s (the entity running the command), @r (random player), or type the name of a specific player. On a multiplayer server, @a lets you give an effect to everyone at once, for example Night Vision during a night event.
Duration
Sets how long the effect stays active. In the command it is given in seconds in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Internally the game converts seconds to ticks: 1 second = 20 ticks. An effect lasting 30 seconds therefore runs for 600 ticks. The maximum duration is 1,000,000 seconds (about 11.5 days). Since Java 1.19.4 you can also use the value infinite for an endless duration.
Amplifier
Controls the strength of the effect. Amplifier 0 means level I (the default), 1 is level II, and so on. Speed I (amplifier 0) adds 20% speed, Speed II (amplifier 1) adds 40%. Most effects accept an amplifier from 0 to 255, but above the natural maximum effects can behave unpredictably. For example, Strength at amplifier 255 deals astronomical damage.
Hide particles (hideParticles)
An optional parameter, true or false. The default is false: colorful swirling effect particles appear around the player. Setting it to true hides the particles, which is useful in adventure maps where you do not want the player to know an effect is active. The effect itself works identically, only the visuals change.
Status effect categories
Positive effects
These help the player:
- Speed: increases movement speed. Stacks with other movement sources (for example Dolphin's Grace underwater).
- Haste: speeds up block breaking. A key beacon effect for miners.
- Strength: adds +3 melee damage per level. Versions before 1.9 added +130% per level.
- Regeneration: automatic healing every 2.5 seconds (level I) or faster.
- Resistance: reduces damage by 20% per level. At level V the player is immune to most damage.
- Fire Resistance: full protection from fire, lava and fireballs.
- Water Breathing: the air bar does not drop. Ideal for exploring ocean monuments.
- Invisibility: the player cannot be seen. Mobs are much less likely to notice you unless you wear armor.
- Night Vision: full brightness everywhere, even underwater.
- Jump Boost: higher jumps and less fall damage.
- Slow Falling: you fall slowly and take no fall damage.
Negative effects
Effects that make life harder for the player:
- Slowness: reduces speed. Sources: potions, witches, strays.
- Mining Fatigue: slows down mining. At level III (from an elder guardian) mining is practically impossible.
- Poison: continuous damage, but it cannot kill (it leaves you at half a heart).
- Wither: like poison, but it CAN kill. The hearts turn black.
- Blindness: drastically limits the field of view. Blocks sprinting.
- Hunger: the hunger bar drains faster.
- Weakness: reduces melee damage.
- Levitation: the player floats upward. When it ends, you fall and take fall damage (unless you have Slow Falling).
- Darkness: a pulsing darkening of the screen. Introduced with the Warden in 1.19.
- Wind Charged: when the affected entity dies, it creates a burst of wind that knocks nearby entities back (1.21+).
- Weaving: when the affected entity dies, it places cobwebs around the spot where it died (1.21+).
- Oozing: when the affected entity dies, it spawns slimes (1.21+).
Neutral effects
Effects that are neither clearly good nor bad:
- Glowing: the player glows and is visible through walls (outline). Applied by spectral arrows.
Effects in practice
Adventure maps and minigames
Adventure map makers use effects to build immersive experiences. Blindness and Darkness create a horror atmosphere. Slowness and Mining Fatigue restrict the player's movement at key moments. Invisibility lets you "hide" NPCs that should only appear once a condition is met. Resistance V combined with Regeneration at level 255 creates temporary immortality during cutscenes.
Server administration
Server admins hand out penalty effects (Slowness, Blindness) or rewards (Speed, Strength). The command /effect give @a minecraft:night_vision 99999 gives Night Vision to every player, which is handy on servers where darkness is unwanted. Beacons on Factions servers apply their effects in a limited range, but the /effect command has no such limit.
Challenges
In "Minecraft, but..." challenges, effects applied by commands create unique mechanics, such as permanent Levitation, Blindness or random effects every 30 seconds.
Ticks and duration: how it works
Minecraft runs at 20 ticks per second (TPS). Every status effect has an internal tick counter that counts down. When it reaches zero, the effect disappears. When the server lags (TPS drops below 20), effects last longer in real time, but the same number of game ticks. Our generator converts seconds to ticks automatically, so you know exactly how much the game counts internally.
Instant effects, Instant Health and Instant Damage, have no duration. They act the moment they are applied. The duration in the command is ignored for these effects.
Java vs Bedrock Edition
Both editions support the /effect command, but the syntax and behavior differ:
- Java Edition:
/effect give <target> minecraft:speed 30 1, which requires thegivekeyword and theminecraft:prefix - Bedrock Edition:
/effect <target> speed 30 1, with nogiveand no prefix
Stacking and overriding effects
Effects of the same type do not stack: giving Speed I to a player who already has Speed II does not produce Speed III. These rules apply instead:
- If the new effect has a higher level (amplifier), it overrides the old one, regardless of duration.
- If the new effect has the same level, it only overrides the old one if its duration is longer.
- Different effects (for example Speed + Jump Boost) always stack: they work independently.
Frequently asked questions
How do I give a status effect with a command in Minecraft?
In Java Edition, use /effect give <player> <effect> <seconds> <amplifier>. For example, /effect give @p minecraft:speed 60 1 gives you Speed II for 60 seconds. In Bedrock Edition the syntax is slightly different: /effect <player> <effect> <seconds> <amplifier>.
How do I remove a status effect with a command?
In Java Edition, use /effect clear <player> <effect> to remove one effect, or /effect clear <player> to remove all effects. You can also drink milk, which removes all effects (positive and negative). In Bedrock Edition the syntax is /effect <player> clear.
What is the difference between amplifier 0 and amplifier 1?
Amplifier 0 means level I of the effect, the default strength you get from a potion, for example. Amplifier 1 is level II, a stronger effect. For example, Speed I (amplifier 0) increases speed by 20% and Speed II (amplifier 1) by 40%. The maximum amplifier is 255.
Can I give an effect for an infinite time?
In Java Edition 1.19.4 and later you can set the duration to infinite: /effect give @p minecraft:speed infinite. In older versions, set a very long duration, for example 999999 seconds (about 11.5 days).
What does the hide particles option do?
The hideParticles parameter (true/false) controls whether swirling effect particles appear around the player. Setting it to true hides them, which is useful in adventure maps where you do not want the player to see that an effect is active. The effect still works normally.
Which effects can I get without commands?
Many effects are available naturally: potions give Speed, Strength, Regeneration, Invisibility, Water Breathing and more. A beacon grants Speed, Haste, Strength, Resistance and Regeneration. Golden apples give Absorption and Regeneration. Some effects, such as Glowing, Levitation or Darkness, only come from mobs or commands.
Does /effect work in Bedrock Edition?
Yes, /effect works in Bedrock Edition, but the syntax is slightly different. Instead of /effect give you use /effect <player> <effect>. Our generator builds the correct command for both editions: just switch between Java and Bedrock.
How many status effects are there in Minecraft?
Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 has more than 33 status effects. They are split into positive (Speed, Strength, Regeneration), negative (Slowness, Poison, Blindness) and neutral (Glowing). Every major update can add new effects: 1.21, for example, added Wind Charged, Weaving, Oozing and Infested.
