Minecraft damage calculator: work out weapon damage and hits to kill

Work out how much damage your chosen weapon deals in Minecraft Java Edition. The calculator takes offensive enchantments, critical hits and potion effects into account, along with the target's armor, the Protection enchantment, Resistance and shield blocking. Compare two weapons side by side to pick the best gear for PvP and PvE.

How does the damage calculator work?

Damage is reduced step by step: first by armor points and toughness, then by the Protection enchantment (max. 80% reduction), then by the Resistance effect (max. 100%), and finally by a shield. The DPS value (damage per second) takes the weapon's attack speed into account. A critical hit adds 50% to the base damage (it requires falling, and it doesn't apply to bows or crossbows).

How does damage work in Minecraft Java Edition?

The damage system in Minecraft has several layers. When you attack a mob or a player, the game runs the weapon's raw damage through several reduction stages before it subtracts health from the target. Understanding these stages helps you build your gear deliberately and choose a fighting strategy.

Every weapon in Minecraft has two key stats: base damage (how much health it takes at a full swing) and attack speed (how quickly the weapon is ready for the next full hit). The product of the two is DPS, damage per second, the metric that best shows a weapon's effectiveness in a longer fight.

Raw damage is affected by: offensive enchantments on the weapon (Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Power), critical hits (falling at the moment of the hit, +50%), the Strength potion effect (+3 per level) and the Weakness effect (-4 per level). Only the result of these calculations goes through the target's defensive system.

Stages of damage reduction

Once the raw damage is calculated, the game runs it through four reduction stages:

  1. Armor reduction: armor points (0-20) and toughness (0-12) reduce damage. Toughness, found in diamond and netherite armor, keeps strong attacks from breaking through as easily. The formula weighs the strength of the attack against the defense.
  2. Protection enchantment: every level of Protection on every armor piece reduces damage by 4%. With four pieces of Protection IV (EPF = 16) the reduction is 64%. The maximum EPF is 20 (80% reduction).
  3. Resistance effect: every level reduces damage by 20%. Resistance V gives full immunity. The effect comes from a potion or a beacon.
  4. Shield: in Java Edition a shield blocks 100% of melee and projectile damage. An axe has a chance to disable a shield for 5 seconds.

Weapon comparison: swords vs axes

This is the most common dilemma in PvP and PvE. Swords deal less damage per hit but have a higher attack speed (1.6/s vs 0.8-1.0/s). Axes deal more per swing and can disable a shield. Which one is better depends on the fight.

In PvP on servers with attack cooldown mechanics (1.9+), axes dominate the "hit and run" style: one strong hit and a dodge. Swords win in close combat, where steady DPS and the sweep attack (hitting several enemies at once) matter. Axes are also the only weapon that can disable an opponent's shield.

In PvE (fighting mobs), swords are usually better, because the sweep attack lets you fight groups of zombies or skeletons at the same time. Axes work well against single, tough enemies like the Warden, the Wither or an iron golem.

Offensive enchantments: which one to choose

Sharpness

The most universal offensive enchantment. It adds 0.5 × level + 0.5 damage (Sharpness V = +3). It works on all targets, which makes it the default choice for most players. In PvP it's essential, because players don't belong to any mob category (undead, arthropods).

Smite

Adds 2.5 × level damage against undead (zombies, skeletons, phantoms, withers, wither skeletons, drowned, strays, zoglins, zombified piglins). Smite V gives +12.5 damage, more than four times as much as Sharpness V. Ideal for a sword meant for zombie and skeleton farms or for fighting the Wither.

Bane of Arthropods

Adds 2.5 × level damage against arthropods (spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, endermites, bees). A niche enchantment, useful mostly on a sword for spider farming (string + spider eye) or for clearing silverfish out of mines.

Power

An enchantment for bows. It adds 25% × (level + 1) to the bow's damage. A fully drawn Power V bow with a critical arrow can deal up to 23 damage, enough to kill a player without armor in one shot and to seriously hurt even someone in netherite.

Critical hits: when do they trigger?

A critical hit in Minecraft requires all of these conditions at the same time:

  • You must be falling (negative vertical speed): jumping off a block is enough
  • You can't be on a ladder or a vine, in water or in a cobweb
  • You can't be flying (Creative mode or an elytra with a firework rocket)
  • The weapon must be fully charged (attack bar at 100%)
  • You can't be sprinting, because sprinting disables critical hits

A critical hit adds 50% to the base damage (before enchantments). It is marked by star particles around the target. The easiest way to land one: stand at the edge of a block, jump off and strike while falling.

The Strength and Weakness effects

Strength is one of the most powerful potion effects in the game. Each level adds +3 damage to every melee attack. Strength II (+6 damage) makes even bare fists deal 7 damage (3.5 hearts), more than a wooden sword.

A Potion of Strength is brewed with Blaze Powder as the main ingredient and an Awkward Potion as the base. You get Strength II by adding glowstone dust. On PvP servers, Strength II potions are standard gear, because they raise the damage of any weapon by 6 points.

The Weakness effect subtracts 4 damage per level. Weakness is key in one scenario: curing zombie villagers. To turn a zombie villager back into a villager, you have to hit it with a Splash Potion of Weakness and then feed it a golden apple.

The shield in PvP

The shield in Java Edition blocks 100% of melee and projectile damage. That makes it an essential piece of PvP gear. It does have weak points, though:

  • Axes disable shields: an axe hit has a 25% + 5% × Efficiency level chance to disable a shield for 5 seconds
  • It doesn't block effect damage: poison, hunger, the Warden's sonic boom, the Wither effect
  • It doesn't block End Crystal explosion damage: this is why "crystal PvP" is the meta on anarchy servers
  • It doesn't protect against attacks from behind: you have to face the attacker

In the calculator, the "Target is blocking with a shield" option sets the final damage to 0, which reflects the Java Edition mechanic. Keep in mind that in Bedrock Edition a shield only reduces damage partially.

The best PvP loadout

Based on the calculator, the most effective offensive setup in PvP is:

  • Main weapon: A netherite sword with Sharpness V, the highest DPS of any weapon
  • Backup weapon: A netherite axe with Sharpness V, for disabling shields and heavy hits. It deals 13 damage and can disable a shield
  • Bow: A bow with Power V + Infinity, or a crossbow with Quick Charge III, for ranged combat
  • Potions: Strength II (shortened duration) + Speed II, which together give +6 damage and faster movement
  • Shield: The defensive piece, always in the off hand and ready to block

Use the calculator to check how many hits your setup needs to kill a player in a specific armor. That is key tactical information: if you know you need 4 hits, you can count your strikes and back off at the right moment.

Sword or axe: which one to pick

This question comes up in every Minecraft PvP discussion. Here are concrete scenarios where each weapon has the edge:

Pick a sword when:

  • You're fighting groups of mobs (the sweep attack hits several enemies)
  • You're in close PvP combat and the opponent has no shield
  • You need steady DPS (for example against the Wither or an iron golem)
  • You're on a server with attack cooldown disabled (pre-1.9 PvP)

Pick an axe when:

  • The opponent has a shield and you need to disable it
  • You use a "hit and run" tactic: one strong hit and a retreat
  • You're fighting a single, strong enemy (the Warden)
  • You want maximum damage from a critical hit (axe + critical + Strength II)

Advanced PvP tips

  • Rod combo: use a fishing rod to pull the opponent in, then hit with your weapon. The rod resets the opponent's momentum
  • Strafing: move sideways while attacking to make it harder for the opponent to aim
  • Axe + shield switch: hold an axe and a shield, hit with the axe, switch to the shield to defend, repeat
  • Crystal PvP: on anarchy servers the End Crystal is the strongest "weapon". Crystals deal up to 97 damage at the epicenter, but they need obsidian underneath

Frequently asked questions

Which weapon deals the most damage in Minecraft?

The netherite axe deals 10 points of base damage (5 hearts). With Sharpness V and a critical hit it hits even harder, but the netherite sword with Sharpness V has a higher DPS thanks to its faster attack.

How do I calculate damage after armor in Minecraft?

Armor points reduce incoming damage, and toughness (found on diamond and netherite armor) keeps strong attacks from breaking through as easily. The game weighs the strength of the attack against your armor and toughness, and the calculator above does this for you.

What is a critical hit in Minecraft?

A critical hit happens when you strike with a melee weapon while falling. It adds 50% to the base damage. It doesn't work while sprinting, swimming, climbing a ladder or flying. It's shown with star particles. Bows and crossbows have their own critical system.

How much damage does Sharpness V add?

Sharpness V adds +3 base damage (0.5 × 5 + 0.5). That's less than Smite V (+12.5 against undead), but Sharpness works on all targets, which makes it the universal choice.

How does the Strength effect work in Minecraft?

Strength adds +3 damage per level. Strength I = +3, Strength II = +6. It stacks with enchantments and critical hits. It's brewed with Blaze Powder. The Weakness effect subtracts 4 damage per level.

Does a shield block all damage?

In Java Edition a shield blocks 100% of melee and projectile damage. It doesn't block damage from status effects, magic, hunger or End Crystals. An axe can disable a shield for 5 seconds.

How do I calculate a weapon's DPS?

DPS = damage per hit × attack speed. Netherite sword with Sharpness V: 11 × 1.6 = 17.6 DPS. Netherite axe with Sharpness V: 13 × 1.0 = 13.0 DPS. The sword wins in DPS despite the lower damage per hit.

How many hits does it take to kill a player in diamond armor?

A netherite sword with Sharpness V needs 6 hits against a full set of unenchanted diamond armor. A netherite axe with Sharpness V and a critical hit needs 3 hits. With Protection IV on the armor, the damage drops significantly.
