Fullbright texture pack: how to remove darkness in Minecraft
Fullbright is a type of texture pack (or mod) that removes darkness in Minecraft. Caves, mines, Nether fortresses: everything becomes fully lit, as if you had permanent night vision. It sounds convenient, but it comes with a few consequences.
How does a fullbright texture pack work?
Standard Minecraft renders lighting based on the light level of each block (a scale of 0-15). Dark places such as caves, ocean depths and enclosed rooms have a low light level, which makes them hard to see without torches.
A fullbright texture pack modifies the lightmap in a resource pack. The lightmap is a texture that determines how bright (or dark) each surface is rendered depending on its light level. In a normal pack, low light levels mean dark pixels in the lightmap. A fullbright pack replaces that texture with a uniformly bright image, so every light level renders equally bright.
The effect is instant: once the pack is enabled, the whole world looks fully lit. You don't need to carry torches or brew a Potion of Night Vision, and caves are as visible as the surface.
Best fullbright packs
Fullbright Resource Pack (classic)
The simplest variant: it modifies only the lightmap and changes no other textures. You can layer it over any other texture pack. Your favorite resource pack looks the same, just without the darkness. The file weighs only a few KB.
Fullbright UB
A popular pack from Modrinth that, according to its author, works in vanilla, with Sodium and with OptiFine. The pack version has to match your Minecraft version. As of October 2026, Minecraft 26.3 needs Fullbright UB 7.0 from September 19, 2026. This version uses pack format 97, adapts the lightmap shader to the game's new shader system and fixes the "Resource reload failed" error that appeared on 26.3. The earlier 6.0 release covers versions from 1.21.10 to 26.2.
Xali's Enhanced Vanilla + Fullbright
Enhanced vanilla textures with a built-in fullbright. If you want nicer textures and full lighting at the same time, this is a good option. It's 16x, so it has no real impact on FPS.
Fullbright + PvP Pack
Many PvP players combine fullbright with a PvP pack. Caves on survival servers or dark areas on Bedwars maps become fully visible, which gives a tactical edge. It's easy to make such a pack yourself: just copy the lightmap file into the folder of your PvP pack.
How to install a fullbright pack
Installation works the same as for any texture pack:
- Download the fullbright pack's
.zipfile (don't unzip it) - Open the
.minecraft/resourcepacksfolder. In game: Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder - Copy the
.zipfile into that folder - In game, enable the pack by moving it to the Selected list
- If you want to layer fullbright over an existing pack, place it above that pack in the list (the higher-priority pack overrides the lightmap)
The effect is visible immediately. You don't need to restart the game.
Is fullbright allowed on servers?
It depends on the server. A fullbright texture pack is a client-side resource pack: the server can't see which pack you use. Detecting fullbright from the server side is technically hard (though not impossible on servers with advanced anti-cheats).
In practice:
- Survival/PvE servers - usually tolerated. Fullbright gives no significant edge when you aren't fighting other players
- PvP/ranked servers - often banned in the rules. Seeing in the dark is a real tactical advantage
- Tournament servers - almost always banned. Serious tournaments check players' settings
Always read the server's rules before using fullbright. Some servers treat it like a cheat and may ban you.
Alternatives to fullbright packs
The gamma setting in options.txt
The simplest method: open the .minecraft/options.txt file and change the gamma value to a number higher than 1.0. Setting gamma:100.0 gives an effect close to fullbright. This method needs no mods or packs, but Mojang may restrict it in future updates.
A fullbright mod (Fabric/Forge)
Dedicated fullbright mods (for example Gamma Utils and Boosted Brightness) let you switch brightness on and off with a hotkey, without changing your texture pack. They work on Fabric and Forge.
Potion of Night Vision
The only fully legitimate vanilla option. It needs brewing and has a limited duration (up to 8 minutes), but no server can forbid it. Ingredients: Awkward Potion + Golden Carrot.
