Any% RSG record history
The world record in the most popular category (Any% RSG) has come a long way. Here are the key moments:
2019 - the classic era (~30-40 minutes)
The first Minecraft speedruns. Players searched for diamonds, crafted a full set of armor and explored the Nether carefully. Techniques were primitive.
2020 - the bartering revolution (~15-20 minutes)
Version 1.16 introduced piglins and bartering. That completely changed the route: instead of hunting Endermen for ender pearls, players trade gold with piglins. Times drop drastically.
2021 - modern route (~10-14 minutes)
Route optimization: instant Nether entry, bastion routing, triangulation with Ninjabrain Bot. The 10-minute barrier is broken.
2022 - hypermodern (~8-10 minutes)
The hypermodern route: maximum aggression, minimal resources, one-cycling the dragon. The 9-minute barrier falls. Top runners reach sub-8 with ideal RNG.
2023-2025 - the optimization era (~7-8 minutes)
Marginal improvements: better resets, micro-movement optimization, more refined bastion routing. The record slowly moves from around 8 minutes toward 7.
2025-2026 - records under 7 minutes
In 2025, lowkey set a record of 6:50.359 that stood for over a year. On July 27, 2026, Skycrab finished a run on version 1.16.1 in 6:39.813 in-game time (IGT), more than 10 seconds faster, and the speedrun.com moderators verified the result in August 2026. It is the first RSG run under 6:40. A year earlier, Skycrab was on pace for about 6:17, but an Enderman killed him just before the finish. More in the article Skycrab breaks the world record with a 6:39.
Outlook: further progress will keep getting slower. The theoretical minimum for Any% RSG with an ideal seed and perfect execution is estimated at around 6 minutes, but it would take astronomical RNG luck.
