Free Upgrade from Switch 1

Mojang laid out the upgrade terms on October 7 in its pre-order announcement on minecraft.net. If you own the digital version of Minecraft on Switch 1, you can claim the digital Standard edition for Switch 2 in the Nintendo eShop at no extra cost until the end of January 2027.

  • A fee applies only in Japan (100 yen) and Taiwan (30 Taiwan dollars).
  • Instead of the Standard edition, you can buy the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection right away at a discount. Mojang didn't say how big the discount is.
  • The announcement only mentions the digital version. It says nothing about the boxed Switch 1 release.

You can carry your Switch 1 worlds over to Switch 2 and keep playing in them. This is confirmed by the game's description on the Nintendo site. You can find Switch 1 prices in our Minecraft Nintendo Switch price comparison.

Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate Editions

The eShop offers 3 digital editions, and each of them, like the boxed copy, includes the Super Mario Mash-Up pack:

  • Standard is just the game with the Mario pack, at PLN 110.00 in the Polish eShop;
  • Deluxe Collection also includes 3 add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O'Blocks), 3 character creator items, and 700 Minecoins;
  • Ultimate Collection has 5 add-ons (the same 3 plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools), 5 character creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins.

Prices for the Deluxe and Ultimate editions weren't yet visible in Nintendo's catalog for Poland (as of October 7, 2026). The Minecoins from these editions can only be spent on Nintendo consoles.

What's Changing in Minecraft on Switch 2

On Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals (in the Polish menu: Odświeżona szata graficzna) is on by default, bringing better lighting, shadows, and other effects. It also works with supported Marketplace content, but not in split screen or with some Marketplace worlds and add-ons.

The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, available only on Nintendo hardware, includes a Mario-themed world, 15 music tracks, and 40 skins. On Switch 2 it will get an update with Vibrant Visuals support.

Mojang and Nintendo haven't revealed the resolution, the frame rate, or anything about 4K, and the announcements don't mention mouse controls via the Joy-Con 2.

GameChat and Rules for Kids

GameChat is a Switch 2 system feature, not part of Minecraft itself. Up to 12 people can talk by voice in it, and up to 4 can share their screen or camera feed at the same time. You launch it with the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2.

The key rules, according to the GameChat page on Nintendo's site:

  • you need an internet connection, a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and a Nintendo Account,
  • setup requires SMS verification to the phone number linked to the account,
  • players under 16 need approval from a parent or guardian in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and can only chat with approved people,
  • video requires a compatible USB-C camera, and the feature itself isn't available in every country.

According to MediaMarkt, the game is rated PEGI 7, and according to the US Amazon listing, ESRB E10+. We cover in-game chat and privacy in our guide to online safety in Minecraft.

Minecoins: A Separate Nintendo Wallet from October 27

This change affects your money. From October 27, 2026, Minecoins (in the Polish menu: Monety Minecoin) bought on Switch or Switch 2 can only be spent on Nintendo consoles. On the Nintendo Marketplace you can no longer spend coins bought on other devices.

  • Coins you own before October 27 go into the Legacy Wallet, keep working on compatible platforms, and don't expire.
  • Coins bought later on a Nintendo console go into a separate Nintendo Wallet.
  • Legacy coins are spent first. An example from Mojang's help page: 1,000 Legacy coins and 500 Nintendo coins show up together as 1,500, and the game spends those 1,000 first.
  • Coins bought later on another platform go into that platform's wallet and will be shared wherever that's allowed.

Newer Minecoins cards from stores may no longer work on Nintendo consoles, so before buying or entering a code, check the list of platforms on the packaging. The details are on Mojang's help page about Minecoins on Nintendo, and we covered the change in our news post about the new Minecoins rules on Switch.

Polish Version, Online Play, and Crossplay

Nintendo lists Polish among the game's languages. Bedrock Edition has a full Polish translation in Mojang's language files.

ULTiMA and the US Amazon describe the boxed release as English. If a Polish interface is a must for you or your child, it's safer to go with the eShop version.

To play online you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The exception is split screen on a single console: if you turn off the Multiplayer Game toggle in the world settings, no membership is needed. The other split-screen rules, according to Mojang's help page:

  • up to 4 players, but on Switch Mojang recommends 2,
  • the console must be in the dock and connected to a TV or monitor,
  • each Joy-Con counts as a separate controller, so every player needs a Joy-Con or a Pro Controller,
  • the host must be signed in to a Microsoft account, while the other players can't sign in.

Minecraft on Switch is Bedrock Edition. Nintendo states in the game's description that crossplay with other Bedrock versions works and requires a Microsoft account. The differences between Bedrock and Java are explained in our overview of Minecraft editions.
