Ever since Minecraft launched in 2009, players have had to work around the lack of a way to sit down: hidden Minecarts, Boats, and even tamed Pigs have served as makeshift chairs. Now, as part of the third drop of the year (version 26.3), Mojang is bringing an official way to sit to the test builds: a new decorative block called the Cushion.

How to get and craft the Cushion

A Cushion is crafted from three Wool Slabs in any of the 16 colors, arranged in a crafting pattern. Once you have it, just place the block on any flat surface to sit on it. All it needs is a supporting block underneath.

The Cushion's biggest advantage for builders is that it has no collision: you can put it on the bottom step of wooden stairs, for example, and in a few seconds you get a convincing chair with a backrest. It also works on buttons and trapdoors, which gives you plenty of freedom to design furniture without mods or resource packs.

That's not the only new thing in this drop

Alongside the Cushion, the test versions also got the Straw Bed, a makeshift bed made from three Hay Bales that gives you four at a time (you can carry up to 16 in your inventory). The Straw Bed lets you sleep through the night and skip it without setting a spawn point, but it's single-use: it falls apart right after you wake up, which makes it a handy option for trips far from your base.

The new additions are available in Minecraft Java 26.3 Snapshot 3 and Bedrock Preview 26.40.30, part of the same drop that already brought the previously tested straw building elements and new rendering technologies.

Why this matters to players

It looks like a minor change, but the building community has been waiting for it for years. Forums and Reddit regularly returned to the question of "when will Mojang add chairs." The Cushion will arrive in the stable release along with the rest of the third 26.3 drop, so until the full launch you can only try it in snapshots and Bedrock previews. Keep in mind that test worlds shouldn't be used for saves you care about.
