Minecraft SkyBlock: from one tree to an empire
A tiny island, one tree, a bucket of lava and the void in every direction. SkyBlock makes you squeeze the maximum out of minimal resources. It's a mode that will teach you Minecraft better than anything else.
What SkyBlock is
SkyBlock is one of the oldest and most influential community game modes in Minecraft. The original map was created in 2011 by a player going by Noobcrew. The idea was simple: a tiny island with one tree, a bucket of lava and a chest with seeds, suspended over the void. The goal: survive and expand the island.
Since then SkyBlock has evolved from a simple map into one of the most popular server modes. Servers added island level systems, leaderboards, shops, quests, special generators, enchanting and hundreds of other mechanics. Hypixel SkyBlock went the furthest: it's a separate RPG with dungeons, auctions and millions of players.
But the heart of SkyBlock stays the same: you start with almost nothing and build everything out of those meager resources.
First steps on the island
The first minutes on a SkyBlock island decide whether you survive. Here's what to do right after you spawn:
Step 1: Harvest the tree, but not all of it
The tree on the starting island is your only renewable resource at the start. Collect the leaves and the trunk, but keep at least one sapling from the falling leaves. Without saplings no new tree will grow and you'll be stuck without wood. Plant the sapling right after you pick it up.
Use the wood to make a crafting table, a wooden pickaxe, a wooden axe and a wooden shovel. The rest of the wood goes into planks and sticks - you'll need a lot of them.
Step 2: Expand the island
The starting island is tiny - usually 3x3 to 5x5 blocks. Before you build anything, you need room. Use the dirt from the starting island to extend the platform. Crouch at the edge and place blocks. The goal: a platform of at least 7x7, enough to fit a farm and a tree.
Step 3: Build a cobblestone generator
This is the most important step in all of SkyBlock. A cobblestone generator gives you infinite stone, which you build everything from. Details in the next section.
Step 4: Start a food farm
In the starting chest you'll find seeds (wheat, carrots or potatoes). Plant them on dirt hydrated by water from the generator. Without food you don't regenerate health, and falling off the edge of the island at half a heart is game over.
The cobblestone generator
The cobblestone generator is the absolute foundation of SkyBlock. Without it you have no stone, and without stone you have no tools, furnace, building blocks or anything except wood.
How the generator works
When flowing water meets a lava source, obsidian forms (useless at the start). When flowing water meets flowing lava, cobblestone forms. The key is a setup in which water and lava meet as streams, not as sources.
The simplest generator (1x4)
- Dig a trench 4 blocks long and 1 block deep.
- At one end of the trench pour a bucket of water - the water will flow along the trench.
- At the other end pour a bucket of lava - the lava will flow toward the water.
- The water and lava meet in the middle and create a block of cobblestone.
- Break the cobblestone - a new one appears in its place. Repeat forever.
Note: don't pour the water and lava directly next to each other, because the lava will turn into obsidian and you'll lose your only bucket of lava. Leave at least a 1-block gap between the sources.
Advanced generator (AFK-friendly)
Once you have some cobblestone, build a bigger generator with a piston. The piston pushes the newly formed cobblestone toward the spot where you mine. This lets you mine faster without the risk of accidentally destroying the water or lava source.
On servers with plugins (for example Hypixel SkyBlock), generators are sometimes replaced by special minions (automatic miners) that gather resources for you. But on classic SkyBlock, the manual generator is your bread and butter.
Progression: from stone to diamonds
SkyBlock has a clear progression path, though it takes much longer than normal survival:
Stage 1: Stone and iron
From the cobblestone generator, make stone tools (pickaxe, axe, sword). Build with cobblestone - extend the island, make platforms, place a furnace. Smelting cobblestone in a furnace gives you stone, a better building material.
On classic SkyBlock you get iron from zombies (a rare drop) or as challenge rewards. Servers with plugins often have shops where you trade cobblestone for ores. The first iron pickaxe is a breakthrough - you can mine gold and diamonds once they show up.
Stage 2: Farms and automation
Once you have a stable source of stone and food, it's time for farms. A mob grinder is the priority - mobs that drop from a height give experience, bones (bone meal for farms), bows, armor and rare items. Build a dark platform 24+ blocks above the island so mobs spawn and fall onto a killing platform.
Stage 3: The Nether and the End
On SkyBlock servers, access to the Nether and the End is usually unlocked through challenges or island level. Classic SkyBlock requires you to build an obsidian portal by hand (obsidian generator: water onto a lava source). The Nether gives you blaze rods, nether wart, nether bricks and access to potions.
Stage 4: The mega-island
The endgame of SkyBlock is expanding the island into a gigantic base with automated farms for every resource, enchanted gear and a good-looking build. On servers with island rankings (island level) the goal is to maximize the value of your island - rare blocks and large builds give more points.
Key farms
Farms in SkyBlock aren't optional - they're a necessity. Without automation, progress stalls at the stone-tools stage.
- Cobblestone farm - your generator. Mining cobblestone is 80% of early SkyBlock. Upgrade to the piston version once you have redstone.
- Tree farm - plant a few trees, collect wood and saplings. Bone meal speeds up growth. Wood is your main building material besides stone.
- Crop farm - wheat, carrots, potatoes. Automate it with water (water pushes mature crops). A single row of carrots provides food for the whole game.
- Mob grinder - a dark platform 24+ blocks above the island with a drop system. Mobs spawn in the dark, fall and die. You collect loot and XP. Bones for bone meal, arrows, bows, iron from zombies.
- Sugar cane farm - sugar cane grows next to water and gives paper (trading with villagers, enchanting). Automate it with pistons that cut the cane when it grows to 3 blocks.
- Cactus farm - cacti grow on sand (you have to get it from challenges or trading). Cacti smelted in a furnace give green dye, and on servers with plugins they can be a valuable trade resource.
SkyBlock challenges
The original Noobcrew SkyBlock map contained a list of 50 challenges to complete. The challenges have no mechanical rewards (besides satisfaction), but on servers completing challenges unlocks new items, resources and mechanics. Here are the classic challenges:
- Build a cobblestone generator
- Build a house
- Expand the island to 100+ blocks
- Make a wheat farm
- Make a sugar cane farm
- Make a pumpkin farm
- Make a melon farm
- Build a mob grinder
- Make 10 snowballs
- Build a furnace and smelt 64 cobblestone into stone
- Make a bed
- Make 64 stone stairs
- Make a cake
- Build a library with 10 bookshelves
- Collect 10 ender pearls (from endermen)
- Make 20 paintings
- Build and activate a Nether portal
- Make a brewing stand and brew a potion
- Eat a Notch apple (from before its crafting recipe was removed - now it's impossible)
- Build an iron golem
Modern SkyBlock servers have hundreds of challenges split into categories: building, farming, mining, combat, exploration, crafting. Each challenge gives island level points and unlocks new parts of the gameplay.
Hypixel SkyBlock: a separate game
Hypixel SkyBlock deserves a mention of its own, because it's less a SkyBlock mode than a full-blown RPG built on the Minecraft engine. Released in 2019, it quickly became the most popular mode on Hypixel, with millions of players.
What sets Hypixel SkyBlock apart from classic SkyBlock:
- A skill system - farming, mining, combat, foraging, fishing, enchanting, alchemy and others. Each skill has its own levels with unique bonuses.
- Dungeons - 5-player dungeons with bosses, loot and progression. The Catacombs have 7 floors of increasing difficulty.
- The Auction House - player-to-player auctions for unique items.
- Minions - NPC workers that collect resources automatically. Each island can have up to 30 minions.
- Slayers - bosses you kill over and over for unique drops and progression.
- The Forge - a crafting system where you wait hours or days for items to finish.
Hypixel SkyBlock is a game people play for thousands of hours. Progression is deliberately slow, which encourages daily logins and steady progress. If you're looking for a short experience, classic SkyBlock on a smaller server is the better choice.
How to get into Hypixel SkyBlock, what to do in the first hour and what the 2026 updates changed are covered in our guide Hypixel SkyBlock for beginners.
Mistakes that wreck islands
SkyBlock is merciless to carelessness. One mistake can wipe out hours of progress:
- Losing your only sapling - if all the saplings fall into the void before you pick them up, you can't grow a new tree. Always collect leaves in the middle of the platform, never at the edge.
- Pouring lava onto water (or the other way around) - turns one of them into obsidian or cobblestone in the wrong place. You lose the lava or water source. At the start you have one bucket of each - losing either one is a disaster.
- Falling into the void with your items - you lose tools, resources and food. Crouch at edges and don't run across narrow bridges.
- An unprotected mob grinder - if the grinder is too close to the island, creepers can explode and destroy your infrastructure. Build the grinder at least 24 blocks from the base, with a cobblestone shield.
- Not planting trees in time - wood is needed for everything. Always keep at least 3-4 growing trees. A stack of wood runs out surprisingly fast.
14 SkyBlock tips
- Never pour water or lava into the void. Those buckets are non-renewable on classic SkyBlock.
- Build the cobblestone generator before you do anything else. Literally in the first 5 minutes of the game.
- Expand the island systematically. Add a few layers of cobblestone every hour. Space means safety.
- Bone meal for crops is priceless. Bones from the mob grinder are your best friend.
- Don't build at the edge of the island without barriers. One shove from a mob and you lose your inventory to the void.
- Keep backups of critical items in a chest far from the edge. Spare buckets, tools, food.
- Your first diamond pickaxe goes to the Nether portal (obsidian). Don't waste diamonds on armor until you have a stable supply.
- Sugar cane is worth more than you think - paper turned into books, and books into bookshelves for enchanting.
- On multiplayer servers, trade with other players. Your surplus cobblestone is somebody else's shortage.
- Automate your farms as fast as you can. Farming by hand is deadly slow.
- Endermen are a source of ender pearls and XP. Build a platform in the dark at the right height.
- Cacti destroy items. Use that to build automatic trash cans for the junk loot from the mob grinder.
- Don't experiment with lava next to the cobblestone generator. One mistake and you lose the only lava source on the island.
- Play with a plan. Before each session, set a goal: build a farm, get X resource, complete challenge Y. Without a plan it's easy to waste time on aimless mining.
Best SkyBlock servers
- Hypixel SkyBlock (mc.hypixel.net) - the most extensive SkyBlock in the world. A full RPG with dungeons, minions, auctions and seasons. Requires Java Edition.
- OPSkyBlock / classic servers - many servers offer traditional SkyBlock closer to the Noobcrew original: island, generator, challenges, leaderboard. Without the RPG superstructure of Hypixel.
- CubeCraft (play.cubecraft.net) - SkyBlock on Java and Bedrock. A simpler version, good for casual players and mobile players.
- More servers - smaller networks offer SkyBlock too. You'll find the current list on our Minecraft server list.
Frequently asked questions
What is SkyBlock in Minecraft?
SkyBlock is a game mode in which you start on a tiny island floating in the void with a few basic items (a tree, a bucket of lava, a bucket of ice/water, a chest with seeds). The goal is to expand the island, gather resources and complete challenges with the absolute minimum of resources at your disposal.
How do I make a cobblestone generator in SkyBlock?
Pour water and lava so that they meet but don't mix into obsidian. The simplest layout: dig a 1x4 trench, pour water at one end and lava at the other. The water and lava meet in the middle, creating cobblestone that you can mine forever.
Which server should I play SkyBlock on?
The most popular SkyBlock server is Hypixel SkyBlock (mc.hypixel.net) - an extensive RPG with dungeons, auctions and seasons. Smaller networks also offer SkyBlock. You can find a server list on minecraft.pl.
Can I play SkyBlock solo (singleplayer)?
Yes. Get the original SkyBlock map (search for "SkyBlock map download" on Planet Minecraft) and load it as a singleplayer world. You won't have shops or a challenge system with rewards, but the core mechanics - the island, the generator, survival - work the same.
How long does it take to finish SkyBlock?
The classic 50 Noobcrew challenges take an experienced player 10-20 hours. Hypixel SkyBlock is a game for thousands of hours - "finishing" it (maxing all skills, owning the best gear) can take years of daily play. Most players treat it as a game for years, with slow, satisfying progression.
